Interview with Reto Frei, co-founder of tibits. Written by Melanie Gath.
He’s always loved excavators, enjoys playing outdoors, and has a passion for fishing – that’s how Reto Frei describes his now 14-year-old son when asked how important family time in nature is to them. Franz met up with him for this interview at tibits. Reto is the co-founder of the vegetarian-vegan restaurant chain, and the iconic, colorful floral wall in the background is unmistakable.
Reto speaks about a very special connection that children can build with the natural world. Throughout the interview, he emphasizes: “It grounds you. It’s so important for kids”. He explains that “kids can just let out all their energy in nature”. This likely plays a big role when Reto talks about his family’s “typical weekends”. It’s important to him that they do things together and “explore the world” as a team.
When Franz asks about his strengths and weaknesses as a father, Reto is very open about the fact that he could definitely be more patient. He also admits he’d like to be more empathetic at times, noting that his wife is the more nurturing one in the family. For him, the most important thing is “trying to truly understand your own child”.
