Hiking up to mountain lakes is especially fun in summer, when you can kick off your hiking boots, build some cairns, or go on the hunt for treasure on the shore... and take a dip in the water if you’re brave enough. How about it? Here are a few inspiring suggestions for family-friendly hikes to mountain lakes in Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. There’s even a personal insider tip from Chiara, namuk’s Peak explorer and product manager.

Voralpsee: A hidden gem in the Rhine Valley (CH)

Imagine walking across lush meadows, hearing the gentle buzzing of bees, and discovering vibrant wildflowers along the way. And then after a gentle climb, behold... the deep-blue Voralpsee lake, surrounded by rolling hills and dense forest. The hike from Wildhaus Oberdorf takes you via Ölberg and Gamperfin, and is fantastic for families looking for a leisurely but exciting excursion. There is a barbecue hut with fire pits by the lake, so be sure to pack some sausages or s’mores. The shallow bank is ideal for little swimmers to splash around and skip stones across the surface of the water. If you still have some energy left after your barbecue, why not explore the short circular trail around the lake? The perfect place for a day trip away from the hustle and bustle.

Four Lakes Hike: a journey through the most beautiful water landscapes (CH)

Why pick just one lake when you can have four? The Four Lakes Hike is a real kaleidoscope of nature. Start at the Trübsee lake near Engelberg, then take the mountain train up to the Jochpass, where you can then discover the Engstlensee, Tannensee, and finally Melchsee lakes. The best part about this is that each lake has a character of its own. Sometimes the water will be deep blue, sometimes crystal clear. Sometimes the lake will lie snugly between gentle alpine meadows. The hike is quite varied and a real must for families with older children who love to go rambling. There are always small rest areas in between where you can lay down a picnic blanket or dip your toes in the water.

Lai da Palpuogna: namuk's insider tip (CH)

Lai da Palpuogna lake near Preda in the Grisons was once voted the most beautiful destination in Switzerland and is Chiara’s absolute favorite place in the world. “When I came across this lake for the first time, I just thought: This would have been THE lake for me as a kid,” she says. Surrounded by larch forests and with its emerald-green water, Lai da Palpuogna is the ideal spot for a relaxing family hike. Gorgeous little streams meander along the shores, enticing you to come and enjoy them. The trail from Preda to Spinas is easy to walk, and features several picnic spots and spacious fire pits around the lake. Ready to discover one of Chiara’s favorite places?

Nestled between gentle hills and rugged peaks, the Wildensee lake sparkles in the sunlight. The trail is ideal for adventurers of all ages. Keep your eyes peeled for that first glimpse of the lake peeking through. You might even see a squirrel scurrying across the path in front of you. On the shore, there are some rocks to perch on while you watch dragonflies dance across the water. If you want to explore even more of the mountain, there is an extra loop up to the Hoher Kranzberg. Quite steep and stony, this climb is only suitable for experienced adventurers with a very good level of fitness, especially if you’re pushing a pram or stroller. As for the view ‒ simply stunning!
